FRANÇAIS CI-APRÈS

Two figures rise from the arid Spanish landscape like dark totems, each bearing a luminous disc aloft — mirrors turned skyward, catching light the earth cannot hold. Shot in stark black and white, Verhoef strips the scene to its essentials: body, land, reflection. The human form becomes elemental, elongated into silhouette, more sculpture than portrait. There is a quiet ritualism here — an offering made to no one, or perhaps to the sun itself; a primal desire to harness its energy, to hold something vast and untouchable in one's own hands. The vastness of the terrain amplifies the gesture, grounding the surreal in something deeply physical. Suncatchers is characteristic of Verhoef's practice: the body as instrument, the landscape as stage, and light as the thing being negotiated between them.
