This lion’s expression may say “don’t mess with me,” but the scars on his nose attest that other lions have. Adult lions routinely get into nasty fights when attempting to take over or defend a pride, and serious injuries are not uncommon. But that’s just one possibility; the nasal disfigurement could have been inflicted by friends or lovers. Feeding frenzies among pride members at a carcass are notorious for their vigor, with every cat battling for a share of the meat. And mating can be equally rambunctious, with females known to express displeasure with a swat to the head.

L’expression de ce lion semble dire « ne me cherche pas », mais les cicatrices sur son nez montrent que d’autres lions l’ont déjà fait. Les lions adultes se livrent régulièrement à de violents combats lorsqu’ils tentent de prendre le contrôle d’une troupe ou de la défendre, et les blessures graves ne sont pas rares. Mais ce n’est qu’une possibilité : cette déformation nasale a pu être causée par des compagnons de groupe, voire des partenaires.
Les scènes d’alimentation autour d’une carcasse au sein d’une troupe sont réputées pour leur intensité, chaque individu se battant pour sa part de viande. L’accouplement peut être tout aussi mouvementé, les femelles exprimant parfois leur mécontentement d’un coup de patte sur la tête.
