Astrid Verhoef Dutch, b. 1973

Overview

In her thought-provoking work, Astrid Verhoef explores the complicated and fragile relationship between people and nature, especially in today's urban life. Her surreal photography starts with images of empty and lifeless landscapes, which set the stage for her exploration. In these stark environments, Verhoef adds various objects and figures that seem out of place, encouraging viewers to think about how disconnected we are from the natural world. By including common urban items in her art, she highlights the struggle to reconnect with nature amidst the obstacles we face. As these objects change into unfamiliar, cold shapes, they emphasize this disconnect even more. Verhoef’s work balances a feeling of calm with an unsettling undertone, revealing the complexities of modern life and the ongoing conflict between what is natural and what is man-made.

Astrid Verhoef's work is part of the collection of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris and has been published internationally and exhibited in New York, Sydney, Paris, Milan, Tokyo and Berlin, among others.
